Discerning God's Will: 4 Biblical Questions to Ask Before Making Decisions

In a world full of options, opportunities, and pressure to choose fast, many believers get stuck wondering:

Is this God... or is this just me?

Discerning God's will is not about guessing. It's about aligning your choices with His word, His ways, and His character. Scripture gives us clear tools to help us make wise, faith-rooted decisions... no confusion, no striving, no fear.

Here are four biblical questions every believer should ask before making any major decision.

Does this align with scripture?

Before anything else, God's Word is standard.

God will never lead you into something that contradicts what He already said in scripture.

So when you face a decision, start here:

  • Does this choice reflect biblical values?
  • Does it lead me toward holiness or compromise?
  • Does it strengthen my faith or weaken it?

Psalm 119:105 reminds us:

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

You don''t need every detail... just the next step illuminated by God's Word.

Does this bring me closer to God or pull me away?

God's will always draws you closer to Him... not further.

Ask yourself:

  • Will this decision deepen my relationship with God?
  • Will it require me to trust Him more?
  • Or will it distract me, distance me, or lead me into old patterns?

James 4:8 says:

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

Whatever keeps you close to Him is usually the right direction.

Does it produce peace or pressure?

God's voice brings peace, even if the decision feels challenging. The enemy brings confusion, urgency, fear, and chaos.

God doesn't rush you... He leads you.

Ask:

  • Do I sense God's peace in this?
  • Or am I moving because I feel pressured or afraid?

Colossians 3:15 teaches us:

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

If peace is missing, pause. God may be protecting you.

Does wise counsel confirm it?

God often speaks through people who walk closely with Him.

Before you make a decision:

  • Bring it to someone who is spiritually mature
  • Share it with someone who has discernment
  • Ask someone who isn't emotionally tied to your outcome

Proverbs 15:22 says:

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Wise counsel doesn't replace the Holy Spirit... it supports what He's already nudging you toward.

Final Encouragement: God wants you to know His will

God is not trying to hide His plans from you. He leads you through scripture, peace, conviction, wisdom, and timing.

Even when you feel unsure, trust this truth:

If your heart is surrendered, God will guide your steps... even if they feel small.

His will is not something you have to figure out. It is something you walk into, one faithful step at a time.
