Strength for the Journey: What Isaiah 40:31 Teaches Us About Endurance

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;

They shall mount up with wings like eagles,

They shall run and not be weary,

They shall walk and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

There are seasons in life when the journey feels long, our strength feels small, and our prayers feel unanswered. We wonder if we’re moving forward or simply standing still. But Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that God renews strength, not replaces it. He doesn’t remove the journey — He equips us for it.

This scripture isn’t just a promise. It’s a process. And it shows us three powerful truths about what God does while we wait.

1. “Those Who Wait on the Lord…” — Waiting Isn’t Wasted

In the Bible, waiting doesn’t mean sitting still.

The Hebrew word for “wait” (qavah) means:

➡️ to expect

➡️ to look for

➡️ to hope in

Waiting on God is active trust — a heart posture that says,

“Lord, I don’t see it yet, but I know You’re working.”

Psalm 27:14 echoes this promise:

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

Every moment you stay faithful, obedient, and hopeful — even when life feels unclear — you are being strengthened in ways you can’t see yet.

Waiting is not delay.

Waiting is development.

2. “…Shall Renew Their Strength” — God Will Restore What Life Has Drained

The word “renew” in this verse means to exchange — like trading something old for something new.

God doesn’t just refill your strength.

He gives you a different kind of strength — His strength.

Psalm 73:26 says:

“My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

When your strength runs out, His takes over.

When your spirit feels tired, He breathes life back into you.

When your hope runs low, He lifts your eyes again.

This is why Galatians 6:9 urges us:

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

God is renewing you every time you choose to keep going.

3. “…They Shall Mount Up with Wings Like Eagles” — God Lifts You Above What Tries to Hold You Down

Eagles don’t escape storms — they use the storm’s wind to rise higher.

That’s what God does for you.

When life hits hard, when the pace feels overwhelming, when obstacles seem impossible — God doesn’t let the storm drown you. He uses it to elevate you.

Exodus 19:4 echoes this imagery:

“I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.”

Your storm is not meant to break you.

It’s meant to lift you.

4. “They Shall Run and Not Be Weary… Walk and Not Faint” — God Gives Strength for Every Pace

Notice the progression:

➡️ fly (supernatural moments)

➡️ run (busy, demanding seasons)

➡️ walk (ordinary, everyday life)

God provides strength for every pace you’re in.

Philippians 4:13 reminds us:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

This means:

• When life demands speed — He empowers you.

• When you’re exhausted — He sustains you.

• When progress feels slow — He keeps you standing.

No matter the season, He is strengthening what’s within you.
